REPORTS TO:  Kennel Managers

 OVERVIEW: To help the HSCC achieve its mission by providing excellent customer service; perform a variety of animal care and administrative duties; and maintaining a calm/healthy shelter environment.


  • Facilitate the flow of each animal on their pathway through the shelter from intake to outcome ensuring compliance with all protocols, while recording appropriate information
  • Assist managers in evaluating animals health, personality, and adaptability
  • Care for sick and injured animals, including zoonotic diseases, occasionally performing emergency rescue and transport
  • Schedule medical treatments for all animals including vaccinations, treatments, vet checks, surgery dates, and other medical procedures
  • Administer vaccinations, treatments, microchips, medications, and additional procedures as needed
  • Place shelter animals into the foster program when required due to medical, age or behavior conditions within a reasonable time frame
  • Facilitate adoption goals by collecting information on the animal at intake, evaluating and counseling prospective adopters, and matching animals with the appropriate adopters
  • Oversee volunteers and assist in training volunteers in performing daily tasks
  • Participate in off-site activities as needed, operating the company van or personal vehicle
  • Communicate courteous, accurate information to customers
  • Treats animals humanely both on and off the job and transmits these values to others
  • Process customer request forms and applications for various programs and services
  • Encourage the sale of services and products that benefit the shelter and the community, such as county licenses, clinic services, and animal care products
  • Educate the public on important topics including TNR, spay and neuter, basic animal care, voucher programs, and other prevalent topics relating to the humane care of animals
  • Notifies Animal Care Leader or manager of needed repairs, improvements, safety concerns, and supplies
  • Implement the shelter’s best practices
  • Ensure the proper distribution of all mail and packages
  • Maintain a calm and healthy environment in the lobby area, ensuring that kennel areas are clean and free of clutter
  • Investigate and solve customers’ problems, defer to kennel managers if assistance is needed
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
  • Attend monthly team meetings and staff one-on-ones



  • High School Diploma, GED
  • Knowledge of the identification of various species of animals
  • Knowledge of the use of standard office/copying equipment
  • Ability to bend, stand, and walk for lengthy periods and ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to work with diverse groups of people
  • Able to work 8am-6pm and 2 weekends a month, as necessary
  • Over the age of 21 upon hiring
  • Prefer, transportation and valid driver’s license with clean driving record
