Help Dogs Like Miko and Clay

Mission Statement: To increase adoption appeal for dogs who exhibit high energy and/or behavioral issues, often exacerbated by kennel stress, by providing professional training upon adoption.
Their Story: Clay and Miko are two pit mixes who called the Humane Society of Charles County home for far too long (Clay for 2 years and Miko for 1 year). Although both were very playful dogs who loved attention, neither showed well in their run due to kennel stress and when they would meet with potential adopters, they were unable to control their energy which would lead to them jumping on people endlessly, getting mouthy, and demonstrating endless zoomies. The Humane Society of Charles County knew they were both great dogs but needed an idea to increase their adoption potential and generate interest in them. We partnered with Happy Active Dog, LLC, a professional dog training organization located in St. Mary’s County and requested donations from our community to create a fund to send Clay and Miko to the Happy Active Dog, LLC board and train program upon their adoption. The community overwhelmingly responded, and we were able to raise the required funds. Both were advertised as coming with sponsored
training upon adoption and both were adopted within a few short weeks!
From Clays family:
"Just wanted to send an update on Clay. What an amazing 3 months it has been. Clay is thoroughly adjusted and shows us what an incredible dog he is every day. He loves trying new things like going on boat rides, swimming in the pool (one of his favorite things), and going to the pet store to pick out his own toys (which don’t survive more than 10 minutes). We have no idea how he wasn’t adopted before us but we are so grateful we were the ones lucky enough to end up with him.”

From Miko’s family:
“Since joining our family on November 27, 2023, Miko has settled in beautifully. His days are filled with joy, as he loves playing ball in the yard and going on long hikes when the weather is cool. When it warms up, Miko is equally enthusiastic about his walks, soaking in the sunshine with boundless energy. Miko’s intelligence shines through in his ability to recognize and retrieve his favorite toys, whether it’s the piggy, monkey, or ball. His quick learning and playful nature have made him an irreplaceable part of our lives. Miko’s happiness and zest for life bring us endless joy every day.”

Miko and Clay’s fund was established to give other dogs who may also demonstrate difficulty controlling their energy a chance to attend the Happy Active Dog, LLC board and train program once they are adopted and increase their opportunity to join a family!
